Blessed are the Meek
This morning I read: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the land.” (Matt 5:5)
Who are the meek?
Those who are gentle and do not retaliate, because they know that God will vindicate for them. They do not try and protect or fight for their own rights. Their hearts are settled and confident in God.
And what is this land that they will inherit?
For Israel it was the promised land. For us that represents the fullness of God’s blessings, which is God’s favour on earth and eternal blessings in heaven.
We see the opposite in this passage (1 Tim 6:3-5)
“If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn’t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions, constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.”
But this is meekness in verse 6:
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
